Legend has it that it was Gabriel who asked Stephen I to convert Hungary to Christianity. The angel also appeared in a dream of Pope Sylvester II, who then had theHoly Crown delivered by Saint Astrik, and with this act, he recognized the independent Kingdom of Hungary.

This divine recognition is represented in the middle of the 36-metre tall Millennial monument, where a bronze Gabriel statue stands. He has the Holy Crown in his right hand and a patriarchal cross in his left. Designed by György Zala, this 5-metre tall angel statue won the Grand Prize at the 1900 Paris Exposition.
